ASWEC Tutorial: MDA - Reality vs Fiction

Michael Lawley and I will be presenting a tutorial entitled Model Driven Architecture - Reality vs Fiction at the ASWEC Conference on Tues 29th March.

Besides looking a lot, shall we say, older and wiser, than our ancient photos on the web page.... we'll also we adding a few extras to the tutorial overview, including the difference between MDA and MDE, and the relationship of those things to DSLs and Software Factories.

Keith, I've been pretty skeptical about differentiating MDA and MDE. I can see a definitional difference, in terms of aPIM-PSM-code process vs a wider domain of just using models as computational artefacts, but I'm worried that highlighting the difference will either chase people into one or other camp, or will confuse them enough to chase them away altogether. Since you play this spin game much better than I ever have, perhaps you could explain why you think it's a useful distinction to publicise?

My goal for this is really to de-spin the differences. I've heard one too many people say "I think MDA is rubbish, but MDE might well come through". Also, I'm holding out hope that the very UML(TM)-centric branding of MDA (TM) is a little less pronounced in the broader modelling/transformation community. In short, my message is "MDA and MDE are essentially the same, but OMG owns MDA, and so it may be a little more restricted, if only in the way it's marketed".

OK, that pretty much rolls with what I've seen. To be honest, MDE is the easiest mark of the "competing" acronyms for this sort of evangelism. The hardest are probably the MIC and MS/DSM guys, with whom its almost not worth trying these days.

See you in Athens.
